Our Amish Builders
At MillHouse Furniture, our furniture is made exclusively by a collective of Indiana and Ohio Amish craftsmen. Wood shops are often located in a barn on the family farm, where the Amish craftsman will labor over your piece of furniture as it is precisely handcrafted.
While the rest of the world has devolved into mass production and automated assembly, the Amish have maintained the timeless value of a hand crafted tradition. For hundreds of years, the Amish have passed down the knowledge and skills of the master craftsmen, generation after generation.
We work directly with each of our Amish builders. We have relationships with all of them and we know them by name.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. Is this really solid wood?
Yes, our furniture is made of solid hardwoods. If you want press board or particle board, you will need to go elsewhere.
2. What woods do you build in?
Our craftsman build in red oak, quarter sawn white oak, elm, cherry, hickory, walnut, brown maple and hard maple. All hardwoods are commercially managed and sustainably harvested from the United States and Canada.
3. What type of finish do you use?
All of our furniture is finished with a catalyzed conversion varnish to keep each piece looking like new for years to come. This is the best available finish for wood furniture. Our finish has been extensively tested and has proven resistant to most household spills.
4. What stains do you offer for the finish?
We have 16 standard stains to pick from, specially formulated for each species of wood. Our stain selection ranges from lighter natural colors to darker tones like Onyx. Also, our stains are made using certified formulas. What this means is the stain colors are certified every year for color consistency and accuracy. While there can be variations in the wood, the stains are consistent.
5. How do your prices compare to other furniture stores?
We think you will be pleasantly surprised at our pricing compared to other Amish furniture stores. As a family run business, we are able to keep our overhead low and pass the savings on to you.
If you compare our furniture to the low end, imported, mass produced furniture sold in most furniture stores, we will be higher priced. However, once you actually see and feel the difference in quality and craftsmanship, you will understand why. Remember, "Buy once, enjoy for a lifetime!".
ORDERING
5. How does the order process work?
The process is simple. First, you pick your design – either from our showroom or from our catalogs. Next, you pick your wood and your stain. Lastly, we finalize your order and send it to the builder who begins construction. Then, it’s just a matter of time before you receive your custom made Amish furniture.
6. How long does it take for my furniture to be delivered?
Our lead time for your custom built furniture is eight to fourteen weeks. In most cases, we can have your furniture delivered within ten weeks. Outdoor Poly Furniture has a four to six week lead time. We know that you are anxious to start enjoying your new Amish furniture and we make every effort to get your furniture to you as soon as possible. However, quality does take some time. Your furniture is not built until you place your order. Each piece is built for you and built to last.
